Once you get dental implants and the restoration on top secured down, then you may be excited about their many benefits. This treatment is the gold standard when it comes to replacing missing teeth, so you’ll have a full smile along with a stable bite once again. Better yet, they look and feel just like natural teeth, but does this mean they can get stained as well? Keep reading to learn the answer!

Can My Dental Implants Get Stained?

As a quick refresher, dental implants are made from three different parts: the post in your jaw, an abutment, and a restoration that sits above your gumline. This last portion can be a crown, bridge, or denture, but it’s the visible part that you see when you smile! It’s often made out of ceramic or porcelain, which can look incredibly lifelike. Both these materials are nonporous with a protective glaze, so they are actually more stain-resistant than enamel.

However, it’s important to remember that resistance doesn’t mean it’s immune to discoloration. The restoration’s surface can roughen over time, so it can become dull or develop unwanted color. This can happen due to poor oral hygiene, abrasive toothpaste, biting down on hard objects (like pens, hard candy, ice, etc.), or eating too many acidic foods.

How Can I Keep My Dental Implants Bright?

With that being said, if you notice any stains, then your dentist is here to help! They may be able to polish and repair your restoration, but sometimes a replacement can get it looking aesthetic once again.

You can even do some things at home. Here are easy tips that you can follow:

  • Brush twice a day and floss at least once to remove any plaque and bacteria in your mouth.
  • Stick to using non-abrasive, fluoride toothpaste to avoid anything that wears down the protective glaze. Look for the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance if you need some help, or talk to your dentist for their recommendations!
  • Quit any tobacco habits you have, as they can increase your risk of discoloration and implant failure.
  • Limit how often you have dark-colored foods and drinks. Coffee, tea, berries, and red wine are some to be aware of. Have them in moderation or rinse your mouth afterward to reduce your odds of stains.

Try out these simple tips and keep your dental implants looking bright and aesthetic for years to come.
